Assessment Methods:

Assessment for this MBA will be through a range of different types of coursework. Across the core and pathway modules of this programme the range of coursework assessment will include: essays, case studies, literature reviews, individual reflective learning log, portfolios, group presentations, critical reflection of group/team work, posters, project proposal, project reports.

Formative and summative approaches to assessment will be employed. Formative assessment tasks will be used in all modules and will be aimed at supporting participants to understand and prepare for the module summative assessment requirements. In this way, participants with different learning styles and abilities will be able to gain a good understanding of the summative assessment requirements and on their journey to submitting their summative assessments.

Assignment briefs will be produced for each of the summative assessments required by each of the modules on this MBA programme. Assignment briefs will set out the learning outcomes being assessed, appropriate material, context, etc. for the assignment. Suggested reading will include book chapters, published articles and published research, web links to companies, and case studies, as appropriate, to the assignment brief. Each assignment brief will include marking/grading criteria so that participants have a clear understanding of what is required to pass the assessment and what is required to achieve higher grades. Grading of a participant’s assessment will be made using the pass, merit, distinction and fail criteria common to MQF/EQF Level 7 programmes of study.

Feedback will be provided to each participant on their assessed work identifying both areas of strength and areas that could be improved. Where a fail grade is awarded the participant will receive detailed feedback on the reasons for awarding such a grade and the areas that would need to be addressed for improvement.

All summative assessed work will be first marked by the academic member of staff teaching the modules. Moderation will be conducted on graded summatively assessed participant work. GBS HE Malta will also appoint external examiners with expertise and experience of teaching and assessment on masters business and management programmes. Assessment Boards will be held to consider participant assessed work, consider tutor module reports and feedback from external examiners.

Programme and Module Assessment/ Reassessment:

A full set of assessment regulations, along with the terms of reference and constitution for the MBA, PG Diploma, PG Certificate, and individual modules, will be produced before the start of the programme. This ensures that participants, academic, and professional services staff fully understand the requirements for passing, resubmissions, and resits.

(a) Award of MBA

• To be awarded the MBA (pathway), participants must achieve at least a pass grade in all six 10 ECTS taught modules and the 30 ECTS project/dissertation module.
• A merit award will be given if the participant passes all modules, with at least three of the 10 ECTS modules and the 30 ECTS project/dissertation at merit or distinction.
• A distinction will be awarded if the participant passes all modules, with at least three of the 10 ECTS modules and the 30 ECTS project/dissertation at distinction.
• To be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, participants must pass all six 10 ECTS taught modules. Only a pass grade is available for this award.
• To be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration, participants must pass any three of the six 10 ECTS taught modules. Only a pass grade is available for this award.

(b) Modules

Participants will receive one of the following grades for each module: Pass, Merit, Distinction, or Fail. Each module (including the 30 ECTS project/dissertation) consists of two assessment components. To pass a module, both components must meet at least the pass grade.

Compensation may be applied for one failed component based on the participant's overall assessment profile, subject to Assessment Board approval.

Grade criteria for Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Fail will be provided with the assignment brief for each module.

(c) Reassessment

If a participant fails a module assessment (or one or more of its components), they are entitled to one reassessment attempt. They may resubmit the same work, revised according to tutor feedback. This applies to both taught modules and the 30 ECTS project/dissertation.

If the reassessment attempt also fails, the participant has one final opportunity with a new assessment task. In the case of failure in a consultancy or internship-based 30 ECTS project/dissertation due to disruption, the participant will be assigned a critical literature review in a similar subject area.
